In 1984, Warner Brothers released a motion picture that made Prince a global rock star.
Prince didn’t sink a dime of his own money into making the film, nor did he write the script, direct a scene or produce it.
So what could possibly have been the upside for a musician in the eighties to risk his music career by acting in a small independent film?
Its Media, not marketing
I had lunch with Angelo Gionis and Marco Gomez, where they discussed a collaborative marketing approach for their businesses.
It was during this conversation that Angelo mentioned he was contacted by 2 people he hadn’t heard from in a while that needed to refinance their mortgage.
Before I could congratulate him on getting the new business, he said …
Both had read the article and thought, “is that the same Angelo I know”.
After which they phoned me and I now have 2 refi applications in the pipeline as a result.
Angelo didn’t spend a dime getting that article written.
Furthermore, he didn’t contribute a quote or agreed to be interviewed for it.
All the article did was mention his profile in our member directory and the different ways he could benefit from it.
Compared to what it cost to promote his business with postcards, newsletters and flyers, getting new clients at zero cost beats the latter hands down.
So what was the mechanism that got him the exposure that led to new business?
Social Media Marketing opportunity
After seeing that article shared
- 16 times on Facebook
- 7 times on LinkedIn
- 3 times on Google Plus and
- 2 times on Twitter,
The social network news feeds it appeared on must have reached people who knew Angelo and were ready to do business.
If that hadn’t occurred, they would have given their mortgage refinance to a lender they get
- countless solicitations from by mail
- numerous alerts, reminders and service changes by email
Therein lies the opportunity with social media marketing.
It offers the chance to generate attention for you and your business with connections made on social networks.
And the only effective way to do that is with content in shareable media formats (photos, articles, videos, audio, etc…) that people find
Prince used a movie to promote his music, sell 20 million soundtrack albums and become a pop music icon 30 years later.
Kim Kardashian leveraged a leaked amateur porn video for fame, fortune and commercial success as an entrepreneur.
And Fredrik Eklund appears on Million Dollar Listing New York, as a real estate broker in Manhattan’s competitive luxury real estate market.
You can utilize media on social networks to achieve your business aims as well in our connected world.
Does it really work?
Angelo thinks so, as do countless other people using social media marketing to promote their personal brand.
knowing the tools, tactics and strategies to when getting started is key to increasing people’s awareness of your work.
Our members will have a course to learn how to experience what Angelo has already. Stay tuned.
